Yes, teaching our kids the deep biblical truths of God’s Word in ways that they can understand is daunting. But God gives us direction in Deuteronomy 6:7–9. He tells us to teach them when we sit, when we walk, when we lie down, and when we rise.
So what does that mean today? We take every opportunity to talk with our children about Jesus. Whether it is at the fast-food restaurant before they escape to the indoor playground, in the drive-thru line for Chick-Fil-A, in the carpool line waiting for older siblings, or in the 30-minute lag time between the kids’ sports with not enough time to get home in between.
We have so many opportunities to take moments captive to tell them about the faithfulness of God and the love of Jesus.
Simple Q&A that teach profound truths about God
Wouldn’t it be great to hear your preschoolers answer these questions as easily as they count to 10 or say their ABC’s?
Q. Who made you? A. God.
Q. What else did God make? A. God made all things.
Q. Why did God make you and all things? A. For his own glory.
Such short Q&A packed with such truth! So why is it that when we hear the word theology we might think that’s too hard for kids and no fun? We promise you—it’s not.
Theology is just teaching the truths about God! One of the best ways to teach theology is through using catechism. Catechism is simple questions and answers that help children learn answers to BIG truths. Whether taught around the dinner table or in one of those lines we find ourselves waiting in, kids can learn these deep truths in fun and engaging ways.
For example, after teaching concrete-thinking children the Ten Commandments, how about teaching them this question and answer:
Q. Of what use are the Ten Commandments to you?
A. They teach me what is pleasing to God, and how much I need a Savior.
Wow, what profound truths to teach our children in a few simple words! We need a Savior!
Now imagine a little girl all dressed in her Sunday best with sparkly shoes and hair ribbons as she comes to recite First Catechism:
Q. How sinful are you by nature?
A. I am corrupt in every part of my being.
Think about that for a minute. No matter how beautiful we look on the outside, our dark hearts must be changed by the Holy Spirit. Our children need to know how serious their sin problem is so that they see their great need for their Savior, Jesus Christ. These amazing truths, powerful even in these short questions and answers, lay a foundation for our children to understand who Jesus is and how great his love is for each of us.
Preschoolers can start with the first 46 questions of First Catechism in Beginning Kids’ Quest Catechism Club—36 lessons that can be used in the school year.
